Supporting Your Student’s Transition to RCC
As your student moves from high school to Rogue Community College (RCC), support is still very much here. It just looks a little different. We’re here to help make that transition feel clear, manageable, and less overwhelming.
High School vs. College Accommodations
In high school:
- Students may have an IEP or 504 Plan
- Services are guided by the school under IDEA
- Plans are designed to support student success
- Schools take the lead in identifying needs and providing services
In college:
- Accommodations focus on access, not guaranteed outcomes
- RCC follows the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504
- Students choose whether to self-identify and request support
- Access and Disability Resources is here to help, and students take the first step
What Changes in College
Some supports from high school do not continue in college. That shift can feel big, and it’s completely normal to have questions.
- No “special education” services
- No paraeducators or in-class aides
- No modified assignments or altered test content
- No guaranteed retakes or extended deadlines
- Grades are based on demonstrated learning

What Students Can Expect
Students have the right to equal access at RCC. Our role is to support that access and help students build confidence using the tools available to them. College is a time for growing independence, while still having a strong support system in place.
What Your Student Needs to Do
To receive accommodations at RCC, students will:
- Complete the online Access Application
- Taking non-credit courses, complete the Community Ed Application
- Schedule and attend an intake appointment
- Talk through their needs with the Access Coordinator
This process helps set them up with the support that fits their learning.
How You Can Help
Your support continues to make a real difference. You can encourage your student to:
- Speak up and share what they need
- Stay organized and plan ahead
Find support on campus:
- Visit the Tutoring Services for study help
- Schedule an appointment with Counseling Services
- Meet with an Academic and Career Coach to plan your courses
Sometimes, a little encouragement at the right moment goes a long way.
