I Applied for Accommodations. Now What?
You clicked submit. That’s a big step.
This page explains what happens next and how to connect with Access & Disability Resources (Access). Take your time. You don’t have to read everything at once. Open the sections that have the information you need.
This meeting is a relaxed conversation with the Access coordinator. The goal is to understand how you learn and what support helps you succeed.
Before the meeting, it may help to think about:
- What makes school and/or learning challenging for you (in class or outside of class)
- What helps you learn (extra time, notes, quiet space, reminders)
If memory or anxiety makes conversations difficult, writing things down is okay. Plain language is enough. You do not need the perfect words.
Examples:
- I understand lectures better when I can review notes later.
- Timed exams increase my anxiety and make it hard to think clearly.
- I need structure and reminders to stay on track.
You do not need documentation to meet with us.
Documentation can help explain how a disability or condition affects learning, but it is not required to start services.
You might bring:
- Medical, psychological or educational documentation
- An IEP, 504 Plan or prior accommodation letters
- Your personal experiences (this is the most important part)
Important to know:
- Some students already have documentation. Some do not. Both are common.
- If documentation is needed, the Access Office will explain next steps.
- You can still talk about your needs even if paperwork is incomplete.
You may bring a family member, friend or support person.
They can help with:
- Notes
- Reminders
- Emotional support
You are still the focus of the meeting.
During the meeting, you may:
- Talk about how your disability or condition impacts school
- Review documentation (if available)
- Discuss possible accommodations
You can also ask for:
- Breaks
- Clarification
- Information in writing
After your meeting:
- Your accommodations are finalized
- Your Faculty Notification Letter (FNL) is emailed to you and your instructors
- You begin using your approved accommodations
If something isn’t working, you can follow up with the Access Office.
Your Next Steps
- Check that instructors received your Faculty Notification Letter (FNL)
- Schedule exams with accommodations through the Testing Centers once they have your exam from your instructor(s) or with Access if you test with us.
- Contact Access if questions come up or adjustments are needed
Helpful Reminders
- Accommodations provide access to college courses, not an advantage.
- You do not need to disclose personal or disability information to instructors.
- You are allowed to ask questions and adjust supports.
- You are not alone in this process.
