What is an Administrative Medical Assistant?
Administrative Medical Assistants, also called: Medical Administrative Assistant, Patient Service Specialist, Medical Receptionists; are integral members of the medical office team. Administrative Medical Assistants perform a variety of tasks in the medical office, including but not limited to:
Job Tasks
- Performing Basic medical coding and billing
- Patient scheduling
- Greeting patients
- Answering and directing patient phone calls
- Checking in patients for appointments
- Checking out patients from appointments
- Screening patients
- Completing insurance forms
- Arranging hospital admissions and lab services
- Maintain and update electronic medical records
About our Program
The Administrative Medical Assistant program is one term in length (3 months) full time enrollment. The program is all online with an Electronic Medical Record simulator system that allows for hands-on training. There is an option to complete the program part-time or at a reduced credit load, speak with the Program Advisor for more information.
A new cohort begins every spring and fall term for core curriculum. There is no application required, only completion of the intent to enroll form.Why Become an Administrative Medical Assistant?

RCC’s Administrative Medical Assistant Program offers certification through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) as a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA).
With your CMAA certificate, you can:
- Work in a primary care clinic
- Work in a specialty care clinic
- Examples of specialty clinics: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Neurology, Dermatology, Sports Medicine, Internal Medicine, Physiatry, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Infectious Disease and more!
- Work in a hospital
- Work for a federal, state, or local government agency.

Pathway for Career Advancement

- Medical Assistant
- After completion of the Administrative Medical Assistant Program, you can apply to the RCC Medical Assistant Program. Students who have completed the Administrative Medical Assistant Program have already completed 1/3rd of the courses required for the Medical Assistant Program!

- Another pathway is RCC’s Medical Assistant Bridge Program.
- The Medical Assistant Bridge Program is a nine-month Career Pathway Certificate Program that trains currently employed medical front desk receptionists to become Certified Medical Assistants (CCMA). This program is part-time and designed to accommodate working full time at current place of employment. Some local employers may cover the tuition of this program at no cost to you!
