RCC Common Read: Undocumented Americans

DPB Common Read 2025-2026

RCC’s Diversity Programming Board is sponsoring a common read of "The Undocumented Americans" by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, a gritty and revealing perspective of immigrant life in the U.S., and what it means to be American.

About the Author: Karla Cornejo Villavicencio is a journalist and the author of the National Book Award finalist "The Undocumented Americans." She is one of the first undocumented immigrants to graduate from Harvard University, and is pursuing a doctorate at Yale. Her work focuses on race, culture, immigration and mental health, and has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vogue, Elle, Interview and on NPR.

Día de los Muertos is a holiday to remember friends and family who have passed. This tradition is celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries. Visit our campus ofrenda displays to learn more of the cultural history and enjoy delicious pan dulce (sweet bread). We invite you to bring a small photo of a departed loved one to include on the ofrenda or leave behind a note of remembrance.

There will also be free naloxone training and kits. Learn how naloxone/Narcan nasal spray can reverse an opioid (fentanyl) overdose. You could save a life!

Graphic novels are one of America’s most important entertainment mediums. Not only are they a multibillion-dollar industry, but historically they’ve been forces for change. American graphic novels’ diverse cast of characters were often far ahead of their time, and we all know that representation matters. Join Dane Johns from RCC’s Access and Disability Resources team for a discussion on disability representation in American graphic novels.
