Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)
Have work experience or non-college learning? It may count for college credit!
Credit for Prior Learning at Rogue Community College
At Rogue Community College, we recognize that valuable learning happens in many places—not just in the classroom. This includes skills learned on the job, non-credit workshops, travel, personal interests, family, life experience, and volunteer responsibilities.
What is credit for prior learning?
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is a way for students to earn college credit for the knowledge and skills they’ve already gained outside of a traditional classroom. This can include work experience, military training, certifications, standardized testing, volunteer service, or independent learning. The idea is simple: if you’ve already learned it, you shouldn’t have to re-learn it (or pay for it again).
CPL helps adult learners, career changers, and students with real-world experience save time and money while earning a degree or certificate.
Credit for Prior Learning Methods
There are multiple ways to earn CPL at Rogue Community College. Each opportunity holds its own requirements that must be met to be considered for CPL.
Note: Credit for Prior Learning earned at Rogue Community College may not transfer to other academic institutions. Students planning to transfer to another college or university should consult with their advisor and check with the intended institution to confirm transferability.
Eligibility
Students must:
- Be admitted to Rogue Community College.
- Only request credit evaluation for courses within the student’s academic degree or certificate program.
- Be in good academic standing.
Military experience credit is granted based on the guidance of the American Council on Education’s “Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Forces.” Review and recommendations from department chairs must align with equivalent courses at RCC. Ensure your military transcripts have been sent to the registrar office.
Note: Credit for Prior Learning obtained at Rogue Community College may not be transferrable to other academic intuitions. Students who plan to transfer to another college or university after Rogue Community College will want to speak to their advisor or planned institution.
Students who have completed standardized examinations may be eligible for college credit. Examples of standardized exams include:
All scores, via official transcripts/score reports should be provided to Enrollment Services by emailing documentation to [email protected]
Credit by Certification gives you college credit for industry-recognized certifications you already hold. If you've earned credentials like phlebotomy, CNA, welding, or some firefighter skills, you may not need to take related classes—your certification proves you’ve got the skills.
Credit by Challenge Examination lets students earn college credit for what they already know—no class required. If you've gained knowledge through work, military service, or independent study, you can prove your expertise by passing a comprehensive exam.
