Purpose

Academic forgiveness is a policy designed for a student with a history of non-passing grades who either wants to pursue a new degree/certificate program or, who has been away from Rogue Community College for at least two years, and has resumed their plan of study.
A student may petition for this opportunity through the Registrar’s Office at any time prior to graduating. However, academic forgiveness will be granted only once and will not be reversed once the process has been completed. The decision to grant academic forgiveness will be made by the Registrar, or their designee.

Criteria:

A student who meets one of the three criteria outlined below may petition the Registrar, or designee, for Academic Forgiveness of past academic performance:

  • Has returned after a leave period of at least two (2) years and upon return, successfully passes with at least C- grades, 12 credits towards an Associate’s or 25% of the required coursework for a Certificate.
  • Has changed their major and successfully passed with at least C- grades, 12 credits towards an Associate’s degree or 25% of the required Certificate coursework in the new program.
  • Has returned after a period of at least five (5) years between the term for which the petition is sought and the date of the appeal.

Petition Procedure:

Students seeking Academic Forgiveness must submit the Petition for Academic Forgiveness form, which includes:

  • A detailed explanation of previous academic barriers.
  • An outline of how those barriers have been addressed.
  • Description of any detrimental impact the student would experience in their future academic and/or professional goals if Academic Forgiveness were not granted.

Outcome of Academic Forgiveness:

  • Forgiveness of past performance will exclude all credits and grades for the specified term(s) from consideration in students’ cumulative GPA, and from program requirements at RCC.
  • Forgiveness of past performance will not exclude attempted credits from the PACE progression calculation used for Financial Aid. Refer to the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress section of AP4250 for further information.
  • The forgiven grades will remain a part of students’ academic record (transcript) at RCC, but will be coded as "excluded" similar to a repeated course.  If a student transfers to another institution, the receiving institution’s polices will apply.

Appeal:

If the Petition for Academic Forgiveness is denied, the student may appeal the decision of the Registrar in writing to the Vice President of Student Learning and Success within 7 working days of the date of notification of the decision.

Within 10 working days of receiving an appeal the Vice President of Student Learning and Success, or designee, will review the request and make a final decision.
