What is AAWCC?
The American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) is designed to encourage professional development for women in community colleges; support women in leadership roles; develop communication among women in community colleges; promote and offer local and state workshops; and disseminate information on courses, programs, and services for professional women.
AAWCC-RCC is the Rogue Community College Chapter of AAWCC.
Our mission is to challenge, champion, and celebrate each other.
National OrganizationThe American Association for Women in Community Colleges is the leading national organization that champions women and maximizes their potential. Founded in 1973, AAWCC provides education, career development, and advancement to women educators and students at community colleges. As a council of the American Association of Community Colleges, AAWCC and its members are committed to equity and education of all women students at community colleges across the nation. Oregon ChapterThe Oregon Chapter is affiliated with the National AAWCC, a council of AACC, dedicated to equality, equity, and excellence for women. Oregon AAWCC is an organization developed by Oregon women in community colleges for anyone who supports the mission of Oregon AAWCC, to inspire, champion, and celebrate the talents within each of us. AAWCC encourages professional development for women in community colleges, supports women in leadership roles, develops communication among women in community colleges, promotes and offers local and state workshops, disseminates information on courses, programs, and services for professional women. Oregon AAWCC is composed of a board of elected officers who work for community colleges and agencies. Who can join?
We encourage men, women, RCC employees, and RCC students to get involved by becoming a member of our local AAWCC organization (AAWCC-RCC) as well as become a member of the state (AAWCC-OR) and/or the national organizations.
As a member of AAWCC at RCC you can:
- Attend monthly and annual AAWCC social and/or educational gatherings.
- Network with a great group of local and state professionals such as OILD.
- Assist with fundraising efforts for student scholarships.
- Take advantage of personal and leadership training opportunities.
- Participate in the annual Josephine County Relay For Life event.
Since the chapter mission includes a commitment to support and encourage each other it is expected that all members will participate and/or help coordinate at least one meeting, activity, or committee fundraising project each year.
Local chapter - AAWCC-RCC History
The Rogue Community College (RCC) Chapter of American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) was re-established at RCC in 2000 to encourage professional development for women in community colleges; support women in leadership roles; develop communication amongst women; and disseminate information on courses, programs, and services for professional women. AAWCC-RCC supports the RCC Foundation by providing funding for scholarships and program support.
AAWCC National History
The American Association for Women in Community Colleges was organized in 1973 and became an Affiliate Council of the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges (AACJC), now the American Association for Community Colleges (AACC). In response to an affirmative vote of the membership, the organization's name was officially changed on April 26, 1993, to the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC).
Statement of Philosophy
The AAWCC is guided in all of its endeavors by a firm commitment to equity and excellence in education and employment for women in community, junior and technical colleges. That commitment is translated into action at the national, regional, state and local levels through AAWCC programs, activities and services developed and offered in accordance with the following principles:
- The achievement of equity for women is critical to the wise and just development and use of valuable human resources.
- Equity is promoted through AAWCC's efforts to improve access to educational opportunities, employment at all levels, and policy-making and decision-making forums.
- Equity issues may include career upward-mobility, comparable pay for comparable work, increased the involvement of women in governing bodies, and appropriate support services for adult women enrolled in two-year colleges.
- Commitment to equity must be matched by an equally strong commitment to educational and professional excellence.
- Excellence is promoted through AAWCC's efforts to encourage and reward educational achievement and professional endeavors, to provide opportunities for professional development, and to develop linkages and disseminate information pertaining to specific concerns.
- Both equity and excellence may be enhanced through a strong and effective network of women in community, junior and technical colleges -- a network where a purposeful focus on tasks, issues, and achievements is continually matched by a sensitive concern for people.
