The Community Health Worker training at Rogue Community College is an 80-hour program of study approved by the Oregon Health Authority.
This course prepares you to become Community Health Worker (CHW) in Oregon. You will be trained to work on the front lines of public health while building meaningful connections with the communities you serve. You will be equipped to act as a trusted bridge between healthcare systems and the people around you, helping improve health outcomes and expanding access to care.
What do CHWs do?
CHWs help people stay healthy. They support people in their community by teaching healthy habits, sharing important health information and helping them connect with doctors or services they need.
Community Health Workers provide culturally appropriate health education and information, support individuals in navigating healthcare and community resources, and assist people in receiving the services they need. CHWs offer informal counseling and guidance on healthy behaviors, advocating for individual and community health needs, and providing basic direct services such as first aid and blood pressure screenings.
CHWs typically work for public health departments, clinics, community care or nonprofit organizations.
Program Highlights
RCC’s Community Health Worker course is an online class conducted via Zoom, offered
twice a year during the spring and fall terms.
You’ll learn how to:
- Practice active listening and effective communication with patients and health care teams.
- Coordinate service delivery and connect individuals to community resources.
- Provide culturally appropriate health and nutrition education.
- Identify patterns and behaviors that affect health outcomes and unnecessary health care use.
- Conduct home visits to assess health needs, reinforce treatment plans, and report findings.

Career & Salary Outlook
Community Health Worker is a fast-growing occupation with good pay and benefits. Nationwide, community health workers on average make about $50,000 a year, according to national labor statistics.
