Before you begin a Family Support Services program at RCC, there are a few important steps and requirements to help make sure you’re ready for success — in the classroom and in real early learning environments. This section outlines what you’ll need to complete before starting the program, including placement, practicum expectations and any required documentation, so you know what to expect as you plan your path forward.
Practicum
A Family Support Services practicum gives you hands-on experience in real early child and family environments, where you can apply what you’ve learned in class while working alongside experienced professionals. During your practicum, you’ll support child and family resilience, promote positive interactions and attachment between children and their caregivers, and practice professional communication with families and colleagues. This experience helps you build confidence, strengthen professional skills, and understand what employers expect in child and family support settings. A practicum is an important step toward entering the child and family support workforce prepared and capable.
Practicum placement will require proof of measles immunization status, an RCC Student ID and criminal history background check. More information is available from the Early Childhood & Elementary Education Department.
Graduation Requirements
The Family Support Services Career Pathway Certificate requires the completion of 32-34 program credits. Students must complete all courses outlined in this program with a grade of “C-” or better to earn a certificate. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an academic or faculty advisor before beginning any coursework.
Courses may be taken over multiple terms, and not all courses are offered every term.

Credit for Prior Learning
The Family Support Services (Pathway Certificate) program may be eligible for Credit for Prior Learning, meaning your work experience, training or other learning outside the classroom could count for college credit — helping you save time and reduce costs.
