Entry Requirements
The Firefighter Essentials 1 Academy is a special admission program with a competitive application process. Before you can enroll, you need to complete specific entry requirements and submit a separate application. This ensures you are prepared for the physical, academic and time commitments of the academy. Because space is limited and the program follows a set start date, completing each step on time is important to stay on track.
Program Requirements
Before applying, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be 18 years old by the end of the second month of the term.
- Be a high school graduate or hold a GED®, verified through transcripts.
- Be admitted as a Rogue Community College student.
- Complete the RCC Placement Process and be eligible for the following course levels:
- Writing at WR115 or higher.
- Math at MTH 20 or higher.
- Pass the Physical Ability Test, which assesses readiness for the physical demands of firefighting.
If selected, complete and pass the required drug screen and background check. Certain convictions may result in disqualification. If you have questions, you are encouraged to contact the Fire Academy Coordinator early.
Before you Apply
Before you complete the application:
- Meet with an RCC Emergency Services advisor.

You will need to upload copies of all relevant certificates and your Oregon driver’s license as part of the application. - Watch for follow up if needed.
If errors are found and the deadline has not passed, you may be contacted with an opportunity to submit a corrected application.
