Starting the Firefighter Essentials 1 Academy is a step-by-step process designed to support you along the way. Taking time to review each requirement and plan ahead can help you move forward with confidence. 

Rogue Community College has open admissions, so getting started is simple. First, submit your application to the college. After you apply, you’ll meet with an advisor who will help you explore your program's options and create a plan that matches your goals. How to Get Started

Step 1: Review the Fire Essentials 1 Academy Prerequisites & Requirements page. 
This page outlines all required steps, documents and deadlines you need to complete before applying.

Step 2: Become an RCC student. 
Apply for admission to Rogue Community College. It’s free and only takes a few minutes online.

Step 3Complete the RCC Placement Process. This helps you understand where to begin in writing and math so you can start with the right courses.

Step 4: Attend a New Student Orientation.

Step 5: Participate in a First Term Advising Session.

Additional Application Steps

Step 6: Complete all prerequisite requirements. 
Prerequisites may include physical ability preparation, required certifications or medical clearances. Each requirement is in place to support your safety and success in the academy.

Step 7: Submit the special admission application. 
Once prerequisites are complete, submit your academy application by the posted deadline. Applications are reviewed as part of a competitive selection process.

Step 8: Watch for communication from RCC. 
After applying, check your RCC student email regularly for next steps, updates or additional instructions from Rogue Community College.

Step 9: Prepare for the academy start. 
If selected, you will receive information about orientation, schedules and what to expect on your first day of training. 

What to Expect

  1. Selection process will begin one week after the application deadline.
  2. Notifications: Successful candidates will receive an email to participate in the testing phase. (Make sure your email on file with RCC is correct; check junk/spam file as well.)
  3. Testing Phase: Physical agility test and interview.
  4. Academy/Student FF Paperwork: Candidates who successfully complete the Testing Phase will be given directions to complete the following:
    • Registration (only for those enrolling into the Academy).
    • Background Check.
    • Medical Examination.
    • Drug Screen.
    • Respiratory Fit Test (to wear Self Contained Breathing Apparatus).
    • Turnout Fitting: We will schedule a time to fit you with helmet, coat, pants, boots, and mask. At the time of your fitting, you will be required to submit proof that you have passed the fit test—and have paid your equipment usage fee.
  5. Academy Orientation.
  6. Academy Begins: Students will show up to class having met the grooming and uniform standards.

ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY TO ALL FITTINGS, ORIENTATIONS AND TESTINGS.

ALL STUDENTS WILL PAY FEES BY THE REQUIRED DATES OR WILL THEIR APPLICATION WILL BE DISMISSED.
