Schedule Overview
This certificate can be completed in one year or less. Classes focus on industrial welding and lean into SMAW with each course building on previous learning as you move to more advanced stick welding techniques.
You’ll spend extended time in the welding lab working on projects you choose with your instructor. These hands-on projects push your SMAW skills and help you build real technical expertise in self-shielded and/or gas-shielded flux core welding on carbon steel in all positions.
You’ll finish your certification with a capstone project that puts your skills to the test. You’ll apply real trade practices — like welding, project design, layout, finishing, planning and estimating — to create a finished piece that demonstrates your technical abilities.
Graduation Requirements
The SMAW Welder Career Pathway Certificate requires the completion of 23-27 program credits and 4 prerequisite credits, which may be waived based on placement. Students must complete all courses outlined in this program with a grade of “C-” or better to earn a certificate. Some required courses are graded on a pass/no pass basis. A grade of “P” for these courses indicates whether a student earned the equivalent of a “C-” or better grade.
Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an Academic Advisor or faculty advisor before beginning any coursework.

Credit for Prior Learning
The SMAW Welder program may be eligible for Credit for Prior Learning, meaning your work experience, training or other learning outside the classroom could count for college credit — helping you save time and reduce costs.
