Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), often called stick welding, is a foundational skill in the welding industry and is widely used in construction, manufacturing, infrastructure repair and industrial maintenance. Welders trained in SMAW techniques may find opportunities working on structural steel, pipelines, heavy equipment and repair projects in both shop and field settings. Because SMAW is valued for its versatility, portability and reliability in outdoor environments, it remains an important skill for entry-level welders and experienced trades professionals alike.
