2007–08 Small Business Management Training

“We value the Small Business Management program. It has taught us how to strengthen our business while providing an opportunity to network with local movers and shakers. The one-on-one meetings at our business have been very helpful.” Penny Oberlander, Pro Weld

Join fellow business owners for this valuable nine-month course:

  • Josephine County class starts October 15
  • Jackson County class starts October 22

The RCC Small Business Development Center’s high-powered nine-month Small Business Management (SBM) training is geared to help small business owners be more successful in identifying and achieving their business goals. Offered in the Rogue Valley for over 20 years, the class offers an efficient, client-centered approach to learning proven and systematic business practices that will help owners more effectively manage their businesses for increased profitability.

What To Expect From the Program

  • Personal counseling at your place of business
  • Improved insight into useful business tools
  • Exchange of ideas from non-competing business owners
  • Exposure to successful business ideas and practices
  • Learning to work “on”, not just “in”, your business

The hands-on training teaches business owners to work “on” their businesses rather than just “in” them. Owners meet once a month with others in their cohort for instruction at either the Small Business Development Center in Grants Pass or the RCC Riverside Campus in Medford. In addition, Small Business Management instructors provide monthly one-to-one coaching at each client’s business site. This combination of practical coursework, owner networking, and personal coaching has been providing Rogue Valley business owners with improved insight, new business tools, and exposure to successful business concepts and practices.

SBM Curriculum
The SBM training follows a proven curriculum that covers a spectrum of core business topics including, Basics Business Concepts (business planning, mission statement, and goal setting), Financial Management (financial statements, budgeting, cash flow, and borrowing money), Marketing and Sales (marketing planning, the core “P’s” of marketing, and sales), Employee Relations (hiring, managing, evaluating, retaining, and terminating employees), Management Strategies (operations, insurance and legal controls, and problem solving).

An optional second year class is available, which most clients elect to take.

Who Can Enroll?
Each year, the program serves owners who are actively involved in non-competing businesses:

  • That have been in operation for one or more years;
  • Are willing to invest time each month to attend one evening class plus a one-to-one counseling session with the instructor on site at their business;
  • Are willing to listen to and accept new ideas;
  • Keep separate business and personal financial records and bank accounts.

What is the Cost?
SBM I (first year) tuition is $599. The RCC SBDC estimates the value of this program if provided by private consultants to be upward to $10,000. A $74 discount is applied if fully paid in advance; and, equal payments of $200/$200/$199 may be made term by term.
