Your cover letter is your first chance to stand out. Use it to show how your skills fit the job. Don’t rely on one generic letter. Tailor each one so it speaks directly to that role and company. Make a quick personal connection so they know you want this job, not just any job. Even if a cover letter is optional, include one to show you’re serious.

Use simple, direct language to keep your message clear and easy to follow. Keep your cover letter short and straightforward, ideally one page.

Address your letter to a specific person when you can. If you can’t find a name, you can use “Dear Hiring Professionals” or “Dear Selection Committee.”

Focus on what the employer needs. Connect the key skills in the job posting to real moments when you used those skills and got results. Think of it as telling a quick story: give just enough context for the reader to see how you work. Instead of saying you’re good at teamwork, share a short example that proves it.

Keep it professional and consistent with the style and format of your resume. If it is printed, use the same paper and header as your resume.
