Entry Requirements

The paramedicine application period opens April 1 and typically closes in early June for fall entry. Once you meet these Entry Requirements, you may complete the application for this special admission program:

• Be at least 17 years old.
• Have a valid Oregon EMT license.
• Have an associate degree or higher from an accredited institution.
• Complete required course prerequisites with a grade of “C” or higher.
• Complete all screening requirements for tuberculosis, substance abuse and criminal background checks as outlined in OAR 409-030-0190.
• The anatomy and physiology series is recommended but not required.

Schedule Overview

This program follows a full-time schedule designed to prepare you for the demands of emergency medical services. 

• Fall, winter and spring: Classes include lecture and discussion two mornings per week and hands-on lab sessions scheduled on weekdays. Additional lab time may be required to meet skills competencies. 

• Clinical experiences: You complete about 100 hours each term in a variety of clinical settings, including emergency departments, critical care units and ambulance ride time. Clinical shifts are scheduled on non-class days. 

• Summer capstone practicum: Most students complete the paramedic capstone practicum during summer term. This experience follows a full-time EMS work schedule with varied days and hours and includes a required minimum of 297 hours, with many students completing 300-400 hours. 

Because this is an intensive, full-time program, working full-time while enrolled is strongly discouraged. Flexible scheduling and a high level of commitment are important for success. 

Required Materials

Full details regarding specific requirements will be provided after acceptance into the program. Requirements will include:

• Approved uniforms for class, clinical and field time.
• A reliable tablet computer or compact laptop.
• Textbooks: The list of required texts is updated frequently, and every effort is made to minimize the expense for students. In addition to a paramedic textbook and an ECG/12-Lead text, the current editions of the ACLS, PALS and PHTLS books will be required.

Credit for Prior Learning

The Advanced Emergency Care program may be eligible for Credit for Prior Learning, meaning your work experience, training or other learning outside the classroom could count for college credit — helping you save time and reduce costs.
