This guide defines RCC-specific terminology and usage standards to support accurate, professional messaging.

 

RCC Terminology

academic degrees — Associate of Applied Science (AAS), Associate of Art Oregon Transfer (AAOT), Associate of General Studies (AGS), Associate of Science (AS), Associate of Science Oregon Transfer in Business (ASOT Business). Capitalize specific degrees. Lowercase when used generally. Use apostrophes in bachelor’s and master’s but not in associate degree.

academic department names — Lowercase unless part of a formal name. Example: RCC Science Department or the science department.

accessibility — Materials and technologies are accessible when individuals with disabilities can acquire the same information, engage in the same interactions and use the same services as others.

according to, said — Use “according to” for inanimate sources. Use “said” for quotes attributed to people.

advisory committee — Appointed by the RCC Board of Education; acts in conjunction with the board such as the college budget committee. (See also “program advisory committee.”)

Alpha Zeta Pi — RCC’s honor society.

and — Spell out unless part of a proper name. Use an ampersand for college departments such as RCC Marketing & Communications Department or the RCC Facilities Management, Planning & Construction Department.

Angstadt, Peter, Ph.D. — RCC’s fifth president; served from 2004 to 2016.
Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) — Not Associate Degree in Nursing.

attribution — Use “said” for direct quotes: “This is my famous quote,” Jones said.  Attribution is not needed for indirect quotes: Jones said that he would give a talk about his famous quote.

Bennett, Harvey, Ph.D. — RCC’s third president; served from 1986 to 1999. Died July 11, 2012.

Blackboard (Rogue Online) — Blackboard is RCC's learning management system for online classes.

Board of Education — Capitalize when using the full name. Use board on second reference.
Bookstore — Capitalize when referring to the RCC Bookstore. Lowercase on second reference.

building names — Most buildings on Redwood Campus are named after Oregon rivers and correspond to a letter of the alphabet – Applegate, Blitzen, Chetco. Refer to buildings by letter on first reference: A Building, B Building. When using the full name, include the letter in parentheses: Applegate (A) Building.

CAMAT — Classified Association and Management Advisory Team. A 12-member group comprised of no more than six members of the classified association and six from management. Their goal is to work collaboratively for win/win outcomes in collective bargaining.

campuses — Redwood Campus (RWC), Grants Pass; Riverside Campus (RVC), Medford; Table Rock Campus (TRC), White City. Not Grants Pass campus or Grants Pass Redwood Campus, etc.

catalog — RCC Catalog on first reference; catalog on second reference.

Coates Hall — Proper name of Redwood Campus building housing computer labs and classrooms. Named after Grace and Edward Coates, who made a major financial gift to the RCC Foundation in 1990.

college — Capitalize only when using the full name Rogue Community College.

college colors — RCC’s primary color is Rogue Blue (C89 M55 YOO K00 or #0767AF). See the Visual Identity Guide for the full palette. [pdf on 9.2.2.1]

collegewide — One word.

commas — Do not use a comma before the conjunction in a simple series: red, white and blue.

commencement — Refers to the graduation ceremony. Commencement ceremony is redundant.

course names — Capitalize with course numbers: Writing 121. Lowercase when general such as math, science or history.

credit class schedule — RCC Schedule of Classes on first reference. Class schedule or schedule of classes on subsequent references.

dash — Use hyphens (-) for compound words. Use em dashes with spaces — like this — for emphasis or breaks in thought. The en dash is used to express a range, such as Monday - Friday.

dates — Use either the day or the date, not both. Follow AP style for formatting.

dean — Capitalize before a name, lowercase after.

divisions — Governance/Foundation; Operations & Finance; People, Culture & Safety; Student Learning & Success.

Dr. — Use only for medical professionals. Use Ph.D. or Ed.D. for academic degrees.

email — One word.

Executive Team — Includes the college president, vice presidents and deans.

exempt — Employees who are exempt from certain wage and hour laws such as overtime pay. Usually applies to administrative or executive employees who receive an annual salary.

Facilities Management, Planning & Construction — Full name for the facilities department, which oversees building and grounds maintenance.

Early Childhood Education Center — Proper name for center located on the Redwood Campus. Operated by Southern Oregon Head Start.

exclamation marks — Use sparingly.

faculty — Lowercase.

faculty association — Formally known as RCC Education Association.

Faculty Senate — Capitalized. Faculty forum introduced in 2008-09 for teaching, learning and academic freedom.

FAMAT — Faculty Association and Management Advisory Team. An eight-member group comprised of four faculty and four managers whose goal is to work collaboratively for win/win outcomes in collective bargaining.

financial aid — Lowercase unless referring to the RCC Financial Aid Department.

foundation — Use Rogue Community College Foundation on first reference and RCC Foundation or the foundation on subsequent reference. Also, the Rogue Community College Foundation Board; foundation board on second reference.

from/to — Use both when expressing time ranges: The library is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Morning or evening only times can be expressed 9-11 a.m. or 7-9 p.m. When expressing days or months, write from 1959 to 2000 or 2009-10.



GED® — Refers to the General Educational Development credential. Use as an adjective: Those passing the tests earn a GED® diploma or certificate, not a GED®.

GED® exams —

High Tech Center (HTC) — Proper name of the B Building (TRC-B) on the Table Rock Campus; houses mechatronics and welding labs.

hyphen — Used for compound modifiers. The hyphen should not be mistaken for a dash, which has a different function. See dash.Illinois Valley Learning Center (IVLC) — Located in the Kerby Belt Building, 24353 Redwood Hwy., Kerby. Some GED® & Pre-College Education classes may be offered at this location.

inservice — One word, no hyphen.

internet addresses — Place at the end of a sentence when possible.

Kemper-Pelle, Cathy, Ed.D. — RCC's sixth president and first female president; served from 2016 to 2022.

Learning Centers — GED® & Pre-College Education class locations are called Learning Centers: Illinois Valley Learning Center, Kerby; Redwood Campus Learning Center, Grants Pass; Riverside Learning Center, Medford; Table Rock Campus Learning Center, White City.

percentages — Use numerals and the percent sign.

periods — Use a single space after punctuation.

phone numbers — Format as 541-956-7500.

president — Capitalize before a name, lowercase after: RCC President Randy Weber or Randy Weber, president. If including doctorate degree, write RCC President Randy Weber, Ed.D.

professor — Not used at RCC. Use instructor or faculty.

program advisory committees — Appointed groups of professionals from the related program area who contribute their expertise to the development of RCC career and technical programs.

quotation marks — Use single quotes in headlines.

RCC/SOU Higher Education Center — Proper name of educational facility on the Riverside Campus; located at 101 S. Bartlett St., Medford. Jointly owned and operated with Southern Oregon University. Use full name on first reference and Higher Education Center or HEC on second reference.

Rogue Auditorium — A 183-seat lecture hall/theater on the Redwood Campus.

Rogue Community College — Spell out on first reference; RCC, Rogue or the college on subsequent reference.

room numbers — List after building name. Example: F Building, Room 10, or F-10.

Sims, Howard, Ph.D. — RCC’s second president; served from 1980 to 1986.

staff — Generally refers to classified staff members, employees who are not faculty or management/exempt.

Student Center — Proper name for Redwood Campus building that houses the cafeteria, student lounge and student government offices.

Student Learning & Success — Division that includes the academic and non-credit learning opportunities along with student programming and support.

term — RCC uses terms, not semesters. Do not capitalize fall, winter, spring or summer.

theater — Preferred spelling unless part of a proper name.

TRIO — Federally funded programs supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds: TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO Educational Opportunity Centers, TRIO Educational Talent Search.

Tutoring Centers — RCC has free drop-in tutoring for students at the Wiseman Center (RWC) and Riverside Campus and via Zoom.

veterans — Lowercase unless part of a formal name.

web — Lowercase. Use one word for website, webpage and related terms.

Weber, Randy, Ed.D. — RCC's seventh president; serving from 2022 to present.

Welcome Center — Capitalized when referring to RCC locations.

Wiseman Center — Proper name for Redwood Campus building that houses the library, tutoring center and various student services. Named after Lillian Wiseman, a retired Grants Pass seamstress and dress designer who gave a major financial gift to RCC.

years — Format as 2017-18 when within the same century.
