Rogue Community College’s Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) gives you the chance to earn college credit while gaining hands-on experience in your field. This page walks you through the steps, expectations and requirements to get started with CWE, so you know what to do, what is expected of you and how your work experience connects to your program of study.
Before You Start
- The CWE Office receives student CWE Agreement and Learning Objectives.
- Student's class registration must be complete.
- If you need help, contact cweFREERogue%20Community%20College.
Completing Your Packet
After student and instructor have arranged a CWE training site, all pages of this packet must be filled out completely.
Faculty should be prepared with the following information before beginning the application:
- Student name and RCC student email
- Student major/program
- CWE Course/Section#
- Credit/Clock hours approved
- Employer name and email
- Is student paid or unpaid? Note: unpaid CWE requires RCC to provide workers’ compensation.
- Student’s job title
- Learning objectives and evaluation criteria
The student, instructor and employer must agree to everything in the Agreement Packet and sign in the spots shown. Everyone should keep a copy of the packet for the whole term. Instructors must also keep timesheets, evaluation forms and grading records for one year.
After the instructor signs the packet, it is sent to the student and employer so they can finish their parts and sign. Then the CWE coordinator reviews it and sends it to the CWE office so the student can be registered. Once registration is complete, a final copy will be emailed to everyone.
CWE students placed at any RCC campus to complete CWE hours must also complete a Volunteer Agreement Form. Fill out the form and submit with volunteer (student) and RCC supervisor signatures. The CWE office will obtain the required Department Head/VP/Dean and Human Resources signature(s).
If your student will be doing any of the following, the student will need to complete a criminal background check (CBC):
- Unsupervised contact with students/clients.
- Unsupervised access to handle money.
- Work with data sensitive information.
- Operate dangerous equipment.
In addition:
- Some CWE sites like Asante, Providence and many school districts may require extra steps before a student can start. These steps may include showing immunization records, passing a criminal background check or meeting other requirements. CWE credits cannot be registered until all of these steps are finished. The CWE Office must also receive “clearance” from the worksite’s HR department.
- The student and the CWE instructor will get an email when the CWE credits are registered. This usually happens within one business day. If anything is missing or unclear, the student and the instructor will be told right away.
- Students should not use permission codes to register for CWE. Only the CWE Office or Rogue Central Services should register CWE credits after the add/drop deadline.
- If CWE credits are added after the add/drop deadline, there is an extra step. After the CWE Office receives the paperwork, the student must go in person to Rogue Central to finish registering. Rogue Central will complete the registration and arrange payment.
- Students must tell their CWE instructor if anything changes at their job site. Students should not drop or withdraw from CWE without talking to their instructor. If a student switches from unpaid to paid, they must inform the CWE Office. All unpaid hours need to be reported for workers’ compensation.
Please make sure the student is aware of the RCC Student Code of Conduct and Procedures.
