Credit for Prior Learning-Fire Science
Professionals in the fire service receive state- and federally-standardized training as a job requirement. These trainings often are identical in content and proficiency requirements to those taught at RCC as part of degree and certificate programs. Frequently, these courses focus on skill performance and mastery, and you may be able to earn up to 18 credits toward the Associate of Applied Science degree in Fire Science with acceptable documentation of trainings, workshops, and inservice education hours in conjunction with recognized career experience. The following information is required:
- Complete at least 50 percent of the credits required in the Fire Science AAS degree.
- Submit a written request to the program coordinator and provide the appropriate documentation in a personal portfolio that includes academy or training course descriptions with copies of certificates of completion from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST), nationally recognized instructor courses, National Fire Academy, or similar state- or federal-authorizing agency.
- Certificates, curriculum and length of continuing education courses that specify competencies and outcomes earned.
- Verification of employment dates, orientation and field training competency checklists, relevant job descriptions and performance evaluations that detail job-related competencies.
The cost of awarding this type of credit is just $10 per credit. Contact Nadean Friesen, Fire Science Department, at 541-956-7415 or at [email protected] for more information.
