Academic Success

Credit (non-transferable courses) are offered through our Academic Success program to provide you with the basic academic skills needed for college level courses. To accurately place you in courses, we use a placement test to help identify your abilities in writing skills, reading skills, and mathematics. You can schedule an appointment to take the test any time throughout the term. Our advisors use the results to recommend the most appropriate courses for you. The following credit courses are offered through our Academic Success department:

RD90 - College Reading (4 credits)

Pass/No Pass (Course Outline)
Improves reading, study, and vocabulary skills by developing specific reading strategies and analytical skills as well as by expanding basic background knowledge that will lead to proficiency in students' college coursework. Skills to be developed include comprehension, flexibility, critical thinking, graphic illustrations, and the use of library resources. Selections, which are excerpts from current college textbooks and a variety of sources, enable the student to further develop the background knowledge and vocabulary necessary to effectively read college-level material. The course also addresses work-related literacies such as creative and critical thinking, following written and oral instructions, collaboration, and communication skills. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis. The course is non-transferable.
