Blayne MilburnBlayne Milburn will represent RCC on academic team

Blayne Milburn is one of two Rogue Community College students recently named to the 2012 Oregon All-State Academic team.

Based on their academic performance and service activities, the two honor students were selected to represent their college by RCC President Peter Angstadt. The Oregon Community College Association (OCCA), in partnership with Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society, sponsors the award.

Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship to an Oregon public university and will attend a reception in Salem this spring with and their counterparts from the state’s other 16 community colleges and with Gov. John Kitzhaber. The outstanding students also are eligible to compete on the national level for All American Academic Team scholarships.

While still in high school, Milburn took classes at Rogue, which helped him graduate a year early. He attended college in Boise, Idaho, studying architecture. “But the economy destroyed that industry,” Milburn said. So after traveling in Europe and the Middle East, he gladly came back to RCC.

“I’ve been really favorably impressed by instructors’ educational backgrounds, and I like how the RCC community really gets wholeheartedly involved in projects and activities,” he said.

“The smaller class sizes at Rogue are awesome,” Milburn continued. “RCC is one of the best community colleges in Oregon.”

Milburn is a 2008 graduate of North Valley High School. A business management and finance major at RCC with a 3.6 GPA, he will graduate in June and hopes to transfer to Southern Oregon or Portland State University. He plans to pursue a career as financial advisor.

Milburn is vice president of PTK and serves as a disabilities volunteer with Three Rivers School District. In addition to taking a full load of classes at RCC, he works full time at Southern Oregon Adolescent Center residential facility.
