Finding a truly meaningful vocation took time, hard work, and keeping her eyes open for opportunities, but for JoAnn Roberts it all proved worthwhile.

Roberts graduated with honors in June 2008 from the Rogue Community College Massage Therapy program, compiling a 3.7 GPA. Now she’s establishing her own practice, Afterglo Massage Therapeutics, and is enjoying every minute. “I love massage therapy. It’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever had,” Roberts said. “For the first time in my life, I have a job that lets me be my own boss, earn a good living, and help make people feel better.”

“When you go back to school as an older student and are focused with a goal in mind, it’s far easier,” she added. Massage therapy marks a major career change for Roberts, who at one time owned and operated a plastic injection molding business. But she found employing as many as 51 people “nerve-racking” and sold out. Then, at a point when Robert’s life was “mixed up and directionless,” RCC Small Business Management instructor Roger Harding and RCC counselor Joe Momyer guided her return to school and helped her identify massage as a career pathway. Today she’s a true believer in massage’s beneficial value.

“It seems like every week the medical benefits of massage — like better circulation and mobility — are being proven scientifically,” she said.
In September Roberts passed rigorous state licensing exams on her first try. I was very nervous, but it was easy. RCC instructors really prepare you — not only for the tests but also for all the aspects of massage.

“I can’t thank the program instructors enough. Tiffany Clarkin (department head) finds a way to work with every personality and learning style.”
