Occupational Skills Training
Occupational Skills Training offers a wide variety of career opportunities not found elsewhere at RCC. We add new training options on a regular basis. We may be able to custom design an Occupational Skills Training program related to your unique needs and interests.
The first step in learning more details about our program is to attend a monthly information session. These sessions are open to everyone and last approximately one hour. The schedule alternates between Jackson and Josephine counties. The goal of each information session is to help you determine whether OST is the right educational path for you. You will learn how the OST program works and some of the typical coursework required. You will also learn about the OST application process; attendance is mandatory if you want to apply to our program.

What is Occupational Skills Training (OST)?
OST is a state approved, one-year certificate program. It is a limited-entry program with a formal application process. OST uses the community as the classroom for hands-on learning in a variety of career fields. These fields are chosen to extend RCC's offerings while not overlapping with other RCC programs.
OST combines general education classes, career-related elective classes and internships. During the internship portion of your program, you earn college credits by applying classroom learning and professional behaviors to real life situations. The internship forms the core of your OST program. Your OST elective classes are chosen to support it. Each internship is designed to meet industry standards for entry-level employment.
You will spend between 12 and 40 hours per week, depending on your schedule and other commitments, working at your training site. You will gain specific skills and a broad understanding of your chosen occupation. You also begin to develop a network of professional contacts that might lead to full-time job opportunities after graduation from the program.
While you are training, your supervisor can evaluate your skill level and fit within the company when determining future staffing needs. Many employers decide to hire their Skills Training student after the experience because he or she has proven to be a valuable member of the team.

When can I get started?
OST uses a rolling admissions process. Students are accepted on a space-available basis. You are encouraged to take a placement test prior to attending one of our OST information sessions. The placement test (or a waiver, if you are a transfer student) is required prior to admission.
