Tobacco Policy Task Force
Rogue Community College has been gathering thoughts and opinions regarding tobacco use on campus. We have heard from our students, staff, and community partners on this topic. Like many other community colleges in Oregon, the interest in this topic was originally generated from the Oregon Tobacco Free College Initiative sponsored by the American Lung Association. - The American Lung Association in Oregon (ALAO) is the oldest, nationwide, nonprofit, voluntary public health organization in Oregon. The mission of ALAO is to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. Programs focus on asthma, clean air, tobacco prevention and lung disease.
- The Oregon Tobacco-Free College Initiative works with community colleges throughout Oregon to reduce tobacco use and eliminate secondhand smoke exposure on campus.
- In 2003, Ozarks Technical College in Missouri became one of the 100% first tobacco-free colleges in the U.S. One of the reasons for this policy was “the commitment to preparing our graduates for employment in what is clearly becoming a more smoke free work environment” (Ty Patterson, Center of Excellence for Tobacco-Free Campus Policy, Ozarks Technical College).
