Weld-A-Thon sponsors High School competition

High School students from throughout the region will converge on Rogue Community College’s Redwood Campus Welding Technology Department on Friday, March 14, 2008 for this year’s Weld-A-Thon competition.

Sponsored by RCC’s 2+2 Early College Credit program, the event will involve students from high schools in Jackson, Josephine and Klamath counties.  RCC’s welding program and area high school welding teachers work together to hold this annual event.  This year’s competition categories are in shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, gas tungsten arc and oxyacetelyne.  Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the winners.

Jim Hamilton, RCC Welding Department Coordinator,  explained: “We are excited that Weld-A-Thon participants not only compete, but have a chance to meet members of the welding industry and see Rogue’s excellent program”.
“Having industry representatives who function as judges and talk to the students about what it's really like to work in the field really makes an impression on the students.”  He said students learn the value of education, how it impacts their future plans, and how it applies to the welding occupation.
