1. What is Form 1098T?
IRS Form 1098T Tuition Statement is an informational statement required by the IRS to be issued by the eligible educational institution that the student attends. To assist the student and the IRS in determining if the student qualifies for the tax benefits available, the school is required to provide information on the 1098T regarding the amount of tuition and mandatory fees paid by the student; scholarships and grants received for the student by the College; and whether the student was enrolled at least-half time at some point during the tax year.
2. How can I find out if I am eligible for a tax benefit?
Read a Guide to Federal Tax Benefits for Higher Education and IRS Publication 970, contact the IRS at (800) 829-1040, or contact a tax advisor for information on how to determine if you qualify for one of the tax benefits.
3. I think I should have received a 1098T, but did not get one. What should I do?
1098T tax forms were mailed on January 30, 2008. A duplicate form will be available after February 20, 2008 by contacting RCC at (541) 956-7399, or via e-mail at
hope@roguecc.edu. Please allow 2 weeks for a response to your inquiry. Please include the following when leaving a message: name, ID#, current address and a phone number you can be reached at. If you are a non-resident alien, the IRS does not require us to send you a form, but we are able to provide you with a billing history.
4. Since I received Form 1098T from the College, will I qualify for one of these tax benefits?
Not necessarily. Read a Guide to Federal Tax Benefits for Higher Education and IRS Publication 970, contact the IRS at (800) 829-1040, or contact a tax advisor for information on how to determine if you qualify for one of the tax benefits. The College is required to send 1098T forms to all students who have been billed for qualified tuition and related expenses.
5. How did the College figure out what figures to include in Form 1098T Box 2 Amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses?
The figure in Box 2, Amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses includes the total amount paid during the calendar year 2007 for terms that started in 2006 or the first three months of 2007 if the billing and registration occurred in 2006.
6. What amounts appear in Box 3 – Adjustments made for a prior year?
This box shows any adjustment made in 2007 to prior year qualified tuition and related expenses that were reported in 2006. This amount may reduce any allowable education credit you may claim for 2006.
7. How did the College figure out what amounts to include in Form 1098T Box 4 Scholarships or grants?
The figure in Box 4 Scholarships or grants includes scholarships, grants, and payments made by a third party (not your parents or other individual) during the calendar year 2007.
8. What amounts appear in Box 5 – Adjustments to scholarships or grants for a prior year?
This box includes any adjustments/reductions that occurred in 2007 for scholarships, grants, or third-party deferrals originally disbursed or paid in 2006.
9. I did not keep information on my payments and student loans. Where can I get copies?

10. I was not a half time student for the whole year, why did you check Box 8 Check if at least half-time student?
The College checks that box if you were half-time or more for at least one term that began during the year. This information is important in determining eligibility for the Hope Credit.
