So, the moment we’ve all been waiting for – this year’s (2018) creative essay subject is:
“Higher education is a product, and investing in it is the best decision you can make in 2018 and beyond. Agree or disagree?”
Today’s businesses are constantly struggling to come to a consensus on what makes a product ‘good’. In fact, there are several popular opinions on how to objectively measure commercial product quality in 2018, and are as follows:
Efficiency – How efficient a given product is in solving an existing problem customers may experience
Longevity – How well does a given product perform after a considerable amount of time has passed
Demand – How willing are customers to pay for a given product, and how happy do they feel after they’ve made their initial choice?
For example, ‘Efficiency’ refers to how well does a product do what it’s meant to do, and are there any pre-existing products that achieve that same goal only better?
Consider a motorized toothbrush. This motorized toothbrush does its goal very well (to clean a customer’s teeth in order to prevent cavities and preserve teeth health), but it requires batteries to run, and one can argue it’s probably as effective as a regular toothbrush, if not less. Plus, it’s also more expensive (due to it featuring electronic components to run) and probably more fragile than a regular, plastic toothbrush. So, on its own, our motorized toothbrush is effective enough, but compared against a regular toothbrush – it falls short goal, price, and efficiency-wise.
Secondly, there is ‘Longevity’. This is quite self-explanatory and can be answered with a single example: how well does a vacuum cleaner vacuum after three, six, or nine months since it has been bought?
Thirdly and finally, there is the question of ‘Demand’. If a customer is not willing to make a purchase regardless of price, then we say that a given product has a demand of 0 (zero). Any price above zero can be measured, quantified, and broken down into separate categories such as quantity, date & time of purchase, etc.
After making the purchase however, a customer can fall anywhere on the product happiness spectrum from completely satisfied with their purchase, to completely unsatisfied with their purchase. If the customer is completely satisfied with their purchase, there is a great chance of building a recurring business-to-customer relationship, including positive word-of-mouth recommendations, positive online reviews, brand loyalty, and more.
If however a customer is completely unsatisfied with their product, then all of those positives can turn into negatives, which inadvertently drives down the demand of that product (for example, if all customers are unsatisfied with a given product, they will theoretically drive down the demand for that product to zero).
These are just examples, so feel free to arrange the puzzle the way YOU seem fit and come up with an original idea on how whether higher education is a product worth investing in in 2018.
