Essay Question: What social impact would a major failure of the aging U.S. power grid have on our country. And what can the average American do to better prepare for such a potential catastrophe?

Additional Information: It seems that the aging U.S. power grid has been underestimated and does not receive much attention, as we are very used to taking the electricity in our homes for granted. So much so, that we don’t even think about what will happen if the lights go out, let alone prepare for it! There have been numerous events of power failure in the past that are noteworthy and are a cause for concern. August 14, 2003, marked one of the largest blackouts in U.S. history when many trees came down on the power lines in Ohio. Roughly 50 million people were affected because of this. This particular instance in Ohio seems far from a naturally recurring event, but it is just one of many instances that point out the outdated electric infrastructure of the U.S. power grid. Materials from the Word War II era are still currently in use – increasing the number of outages in the country year over year. The U.S. is also recognized for having the most blackouts compared to any other developed nation, as our outages average more than an hour now – directly affecting our economy.

Our heavy dependence on our old power grids, especially with our increasing demand for modern technology, should bring this issue to the forefront of our nation’s priorities. A single system failure can result in an unfathomable catastrophe. With that in mind, please write an essay and elaborate on what social impact would a major failure of the aging U.S. power grid have on our country. And what can the average American do to better prepare for such a potential catastrophe?”
