AAPD PAUL G. HEARNE LEADERSHIP AWARDS PROGRAM

Through the AAPD Paul G. Hearne Leadership Awards, the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) recognizes outstanding emerging leaders with disabilities who exemplify leadership, advocacy, and dedication to the broader cross-disability community. Two individuals will each receive $2,500 in recognition of their outstanding contributions and $7,500 to further a new or existing project or initiative that increases the political and economic power of people with disabilities. The recipients of the 2016 AAPD Paul G. Hearne Leadership Awards will be honored among national disability leaders at the AAPD Leadership Awards Gala in Washington, DC on March 23, 2016.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES
Candidates for the AAPD Paul G. Hearne Leadership Award must submit all required documentation according to the following instructions. Candidates must complete the application information section, submit their responses to the two (2) essay questions, include two (2) letters of support – one (1) letter of commitment from the mentor who is prepared to work with the applicant in pursuing their leadership goals, and one (1) letter of professional recommendation, and attach a copy of their current resume. All documents should be returned to [email protected]. We strongly encourage attaching all required documents in one submission with both letters of support attached. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered. We will not be able to consider any materials in excess of the stated requirements.

ESSAY QUESTIONS
Answer each question below within the specified word limit.
1. What qualifies you as an emerging leader and how has your work impacted the disability community? (500 words or less)
2. Please describe the new or existing initiative that you would lead and implement, detailing how the funding and your status as an AAPD Paul G. Hearne Leadership Award recipient would allow you to further your efforts in the disability community. (1000 words or less)

LETTERS OF SUPPORT
Applicants must also attach two (2) letters of support.
-One (1) letter from a professional reference who can attest to the impact of your work on the local community, and the importance of your work for the broader national disability community; and,
-One (1) letter from a mentor or supportive colleague who is committed to working closely with you during your year as an AAPD Paul G. Hearne Leadership Award recipient, and who addresses your qualifications for the award, your commitment to pursuing your personal leadership goals, and the specific ways in which he/she will mentor you in achieving those goals.

AWARDEE REQUIREMENTS
Recipients of the 2016 AAPD Paul G. Hearne Leadership Award must meet the following obligations:
-Attend the AAPD Leadership Awards Gala on March 23rd, 2016 in Washington,
DC (travel accommodations will be provided as necessary)
-Submit a quarterly progress report on the status of your project or initiative
-Submit a final report detailing the outcomes of your project or initiative, including an accounting of all expenditures
-Present your work to the 2016 AAPD Summer Internship Program class
-Actively promote the AAPD Paul G. Hearne Leadership Awards program as well as other AAPD programs, such as AAPD’s Disability Equality Index (in collaboration with the USBLN), Disability Mentoring Day, and the Summer Internship Program, to help grow the strength and outreach of AAPD nationally
-Contribute to AAPD’s social media and other communication channels to amplify and elevate your work and the work of AAPD
