As President of the AFT, from 1974 until his death in 1997, Albert F. Shanker worked to build a powerful union which included not only teachers, but also paraprofessionals, public employees and health care professionals. During his twenty-three year presidency, AFT tripled its membership, and boasted more than 900,000 at the time of his death in January, 1997.

Program eligibility: Must be AFT-Oregon member’s child or grandchild. (“Fair Share” payers are not members) Currently attending an accredited higher education institution or trade program and planning to continue higher education in the 2013-14 academic year. PLEASE NOTE: AFT Local 5017 (OFNHP) is classified as a Regional Council; and Local 6732 (OSEA) is considered a direct affiliate of AFT. Neither are AFT-Oregon affiliates, and dependents of these Locals are not eligible.

Instructions and checklist: Please complete the Application Form, the Writing Assignment, and provide at least two References and your most recent Transcript. _____ Application form. Complete all questions on both sides of form. Leave a question blank only if not applicable and indicate by inserting "n/a." Sign the application and attach your transcripts. _____ Writing assignment. Complete the assignment as directed. Don’t forget the certification of original composition. _____ References. You must provide at least two. References should be an adult who knows you well and can attest to your outstanding qualities. Provide your references with a stamped envelope addressed to AFT-Oregon, and remind them of the postmark deadline. _____ Transcripts. Attach a copy of your most current transcript from the college, university or trade program where you are enrolled. If you are a college freshman, please also provide your final high school transcript. _____ Deadline. Return completed forms to: AFT-Oregon Scholarship Program, 7035 SW Hampton St., Tigard, OR 97223. All parts of your application must be postmarked by JANUARY 31, 2013. If delivered by other than the U.S. Mail, all materials must be received in the AFT-Oregon office by 5:00 P.M., JANUARY 31, 2013.
