Evacuation Plans

In the instance of a fire, appointed RCC staff and faculty will guide students and staff who use mobility devices out of the building. Students and staff located on the first floor should proceed to the assembly area. 

RCC staff and faculty are to help ensure that people go directly to the predetermined evacuation points in a prompt and orderly fashion.

Individuals using a mobility device on upper-level floors are to gather in the “Disability Staging Area” located on top of the stairwell of each floor. 

Individuals who use mobility devices should not be evacuated by untrained personnel. The individual with the mobility impairment is to wait in the “Disability Staging Area”, stairwell.

Appointed RCC staff and faculty are to:

  • Evacuate with other staff/students.
  • Note the location of individuals waiting in the staging areas.
  • Report to the fire department/emergency personnel the location of each individuals waiting in the staging area and the type of the mobility device they use. 
  • If the fire department is not on scene, call 911 and report the location of individuals waiting in the staging area to the 911 operator.
  • Evacuation of persons waiting in the staging area is the first priority for first responders. 

For Visually Impaired Persons

  • Explain the nature of the emergency to the individual.
  • Offer to guide the individual to the quickest and safest exit.
  • Ask if you may guide the individual by his/her elbow.
  • Describe to the individual his/her location and advise him/her of any obstacles.
  • Proceed to the assembly point, reorient the individual and ask if further assistance is required.
  • Ask another person to continue to stay with them

For Hearing Impaired Persons

  • Obtain the individuals attention by turning the lights switch on and off, touching their shoulder, or making eye contact.
  • Write a note to the individual
  • explaining the nature of the emergency, safest emergency exit, and location to which they should evacuate.
  • Offer to assist the individual to the nearest and safest exit including emergency exits.
  • Proceed to the assembly point, and ask if further assistance is required.
  • Ask another person to continue to stay with them.
  • Relay the location of individuals waiting in the staging area to the 911 operator.
  • Evacuation of persons waiting in the staging area is the first priority for first responders. 
  • Get the individual to the nearest and safest exit including emergency exits.
  • Proceed to the assembly point, and ask if further assistance is required.
