Provides training in communication skills and referral techniques for locating college and community-based resources/services. Students serve as resource personnel to assist and refer other students with personal, social or academic concerns.
College Success and Survival for TRIO Students
Helps TRIO students make personal and social adjustments for college success. Focuses on college/university transfer requirements and preparation; college terms and information; class choice, degree requirements, use of library, tours, and student services; personal learning strengths and weaknesses; balancing work, school and home demands; financial planning; study partnerships; and stress and time management. Prerequisites: RD30, WR115; CS101 or CS120 or documented proficiency.
Study Skills for College Learning
Designed to directly support TRIO students’ academic programs and improve their related success, as measured by GPA and number of credit hours successfully completed during the course of the term. Provides students information, techniques, strategies and skills helpful in becoming more efficient in time management, studying, listening, note taking and taking exams; addresses basic principles of psychology of learning and memory as they relate to college students. Prerequisites: RD30, WR115; CS101 or CS120 or documented proficiency.
Career Development
Provides the contemporary tools needed to make informed career decisions. Includes interest testing and self-assessment skills, values and attitudes. Students will learn how to locate labor market data, conduct informational interviewing, make decisions, and set goals in this class. Prerequisites: BT90 or equivalent skills, RD30 and WR115.
Assertiveness Training
Examines assertiveness and its relationship to personality development. Focuses on responsible assertive behavior in everyday life, emphasizing communication that respects self and others. Prerequisites: RD30 and WR30.
Decision Making
Develops an awareness of personal decision-making style. Encourages the practice of different decision-making styles to make effective life choices. Prerequisites: RD30 and WR30.
Exploring Careers in Science and Technology
Explores professional technical careers in the fields of automotive/diesel, building construction, computer science, etc. Investigates diverse subjects including high technology and the trades, and explores the dynamic changing roles of men and women in the workplace. Prerequisites: RD30, WR115; CS101 or CS120 or documented proficiency.
Improving Parent-Child Relationships
Presents a coherent approach to positive parenting and is flexibly designed to meet parents’ varying needs and schedules. Specific parent-child interactions are analyzed and practical steps for effective interaction are identified. Prerequisites: RD30, WR121.

New Student Orientation
Offers students the opportunity to learn essential skills and strategies to become successful students. Covers topics such as learning styles, goal setting, time management, financial planning, stress reduction techniques, and how to balance work, school and home demands. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis.

Provides students with the forum in which to explore careers in various fields of study and/or in various career clusters. Surveys techniques for marketing individual occupational skills. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis.

Transitions I w/Lab
Increases self awareness and identifies patterns of behavior which block personal growth and development. Helpful strategies for change will be explored in small and large group activities. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis.

Transitions II
Provides a structure for students engaging in career exploration and decision making. Building on the self awareness and personal growth work done in HD80, students will focus on career choice. Tools for planning a career and educational path are presented and used in developing individual plans. Success skills for the workplace and in job search are introduced. Students are encouraged to work as a team to support and assist each other. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis. Prerequisite: HD80 or permission of instructor.
College Student Success and Survival
Introduces students to aspects of academic success centering on strategies for discipline- and delivery-specific study habits, Web-based resources and tools, and study groups. Focuses on achieving positive outcomes in the academic environment by using the frame-works of teaching and learning style interactions, college systems understanding, and positive behavior and communication skills. Prerequisites:
RD30 and WR30.
Life Planning
Focuses on self-exploration and the development of career/life-planning skills through a process of analyzing predictable life transitions. Emphasis will be on understanding theories of adult development, and students will practice applying theory to life by integrating skills in self assessment, goal setting, decision making, and plan implementation. Prerequisites: RD30 and BT113 or WR115.
Human Potential
Challenges students to cross over the boundaries of various academic disciplines and learn to use their imaginations freely to synthesize information and reshape ideas into new possibilities. Emphasis is on exploring and developing creative potential through art, drama, and writing. Prerequisites: RD30 and WR121.
Leadership
Promotes awareness and skills in the areas of personal effectiveness and leadership. Covers leadership theories, communication and conflict resolution, diversity awareness, and presentation skills. Prerequisites: RD30, WR115 or permission of instructor.
Service Leadership Seminar I
The first of a three-part sequence, provides opportunities for students to learn about the personal and social rewards of civic responsibility through direct civic involvement. Prerequisites: CS101
or CS120, RD30, and BT113 or WR115.
Service Leadership Seminar II
The second of a three-part sequence, focuses on developing professional presentation skills in a community forum. Prerequisites: CS10
or CS120, HD151, RD30, and BT113 or WR115.

Provides practical opportunities for students to experience the personal growth and human development made possible through direct civic involvement. Prerequisites: BT113 or WR115, CS101,

Transfer Success
Prepares TRiO students for transfer to four-year colleges or universities. Focuses on under-standing the different types of educational institutions, development of strategies for choosing a transfer institution and major, identification of resources to assist in the transfer process, and information for obtaining financial aid including scholarships. Students will receive training in CIS (Career Information Systems) and use various school Web sites to aid in decision making. Prerequisites: CS101, CS120 or BA131 (or demonstrated computer proficiency); WR121.
