Studies structure and composition of the earth, minerals, and igneous and metamorphic rocks. Focuses on plate tectonics, volcanism, and earthquake activity (101); weathering processes, streams, ground water, glaciers, mass movements, wind, and oceans (102); and sedimentation, sedimentary environment, fossils, and fossilization along with the stratigraphic history of North America (103). Regional Field Studies: Crater Lake

This introductory field study is held at Oregon’s Crater Lake National Park. Involves hiking, camping, traveling by car, and possible overnight stays. It uses both classroom preparation and site visitation to familiarize students with the geology and surrounding land forms of Crater Lake. Discussions include the history of human influences on the area and the subsequent environmental effects. Students will design and submit research papers and multimedia collages for credit. Prerequisite: GS104 or consent of instructor.
