Foreign Language & International Studies

Search for FR101 FR101, Search for 102 102, Search for 103 103 4 credits each

First Year French I, II, III

Introduces the French language through exercises in reading and speaking; includes elementary composition and grammar. Special attention is given to developing aural comprehension. Foreign language classes must be taken in sequence. Not suitable for heritage speakers. Prerequisites: RD30 or designated placement test score as shown on current indicator chart; BT114 or WR121 (may be taken concurrently).

Beginning French Conversation I, II, III

Reviews and increases French listening and speaking skills and cultural understanding. Emphasizes cultural values, fosters a sense of community and collaboration, improves communication skills in regard to the global community as well as the increasingly diverse local community. Students will demonstrate these skills corresponding to the novice‑mid to novice‑high level of the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) proficiency scale in the areas of speaking, listening, and culture. Includes reading, writing and grammar only when incidental to the focus on conversation. Prerequisite: FR102 or permission of instructor; RD30 or designated placement test score as shown on current indicator chart; BT114 or WR121 (may be taken concurrently).

Second Year French I, II, III

Reviews grammar and includes a study of representative French authors; attention is given to oral use of the language. Foreign language classes must be taken in sequence. Prerequisite: FR103 or permission of instructor, RD30 or designated placement test score as shown on current indicator chart; BT114 or WR121 (may be taken concurrently).

Introduction to International Studies I

Explores major cultures of the world with an emphasis on definition of culture, values, cross-cultural communication, and ethnocentrism. Prerequisites: RD30 or designated placement test score as shown on current indicator chart; BT114 or WR121 (may be taken concurrently).

Search for IS111 IS111 3 credits

Introduction to International Studies II

Investigates contemporary global problems with an emphasis on the ethics of development, environment, foreign policy, and societal change. Prerequisites: RD30 or designated placement test score as shown on current indicator chart; BT114 or WR121 (may be taken concurrently).

Introduces basic skills in reading and speaking; includes elementary exercises in grammar, reading and composition.  Special attention is given to developing aural comprehension and to developing cultural awareness.  Must be taken in sequence.  Prerequisites: RD30 or designated placement test score as shown on current indicator chart; BT114 or WR121 (may be taken concurrently).

Italian Conversation I, II, III

Develops hand-sign language system of manual communication using formal signs, fingerspelling, pantomime gestures, facial expressions, and body movements to convey meanings.
