Introduction to Drawing I (Value)
Explores how the concepts of light, form, and spatial relationships create the illusion of three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface. Introduces traditional and contemporary drawing techniques using a variety of black and white media.
Introduction to Drawing II (Line)
Studies how line is used as an expressive tool to develop basic skills in observation, representation, perception, and hand-eye-mind coordination. Introduces traditional and contemporary drawing techniques using a variety of black, white, and color media.
Introduction to Drawing III (Mixed Media)
Explores how abstract and contemporary ideas and images are used to challenge the imagination and focus on the process of making drawings. Includes an improvisational collage-making approach using traditional and non-traditional art materials.

Gallery Design and Management
Explores the inner workings of a gallery from the perspectives of the artist and gallery director. Training includes installation of exhibits, communicating with artists, recordkeeping, mailings, shipping and receiving art work, and publicity. Discussion focuses on the various methods of installation, contemporary issues, historical perspectives, and critiques.

History of Western Art I, II, III
Studies the history of art in the context of the cultures producing them by studying selected works of painting, sculpture, architecture, and other fine arts from prehistoric to medieval periods (204), medieval to Renaissance periods (205), and 18th century to contemporary times (206) May require use of the Internet and WebCT.
History of Asian Art
Surveys art produced in India (207), China (208), and Japan (209) from prehistoric to modern times.
Survey of Visual Arts
Enhances appreciation of art by comparing works from diverse cultures and historical periods. An interdisciplinary studies approach is used to reveal the aesthetic, purpose, and meaning of art from prehistory to modern times. Recommended for non-art majors. May require use of the Internet and WebCT.

Emphasizes layout, paste-up, design, and typography as applied to the field of graphic design.
Graphic Design (Introduction to Advertising)
Provides overview of the advertising design field by studying advertising layout, package, industrial and brochure design, corporate image, signage, point of purchase, and direct mail. Also examines the motivational, psychological, functional, and aesthetic aspects of the advertising industry.
Graphic Design (Typography)
Studies design and use of letter forms, emphasizes the importance of typography as a design element, and stresses technical skills leading to computer use.
Figure Drawing I
Introduces technique and process in drawing the human figure from real life with a variety of media. Emphasis is on rendering life-like form in terms of the human structure.
Figure Drawing II, III
Continues development of skills to draw the human form from a model. Emphasis is on skills enhancing individual intent and expression.
Illustration I (Drawing
Introduces drawing and designing for commercial art applications. Includes materials and techniques for book and magazine illustration as well as advertising.
Illustration II (Figure Drawing)
Focuses on drawing and designing for commercial art applications. Includes materials and techniques for book and magazine illustration as well as advertising.
Illustration III (Advanced Drawing)
Covers advanced drawing and designing for commercial art applications. Includes materials and techniques for book and magazine illustration as well as advertising.
Stained Glass (Copper Foil Method)
Introduces students to tools and techniques used in working with colored glass through a combination of demonstrations, studio work and group discussions. Furthers design awareness and develops step-by-step techniques and craftsmanship skills as two projects using the copper foil method are required.
Ceramics I, II, III
Introduces materials, tools, and techniques in producing ceramic pottery and sculptural forms. Includes hand building, wheel throwing, glaze formulation and application, firing, and other finishes for clay.
Beginning/Intermediate/Advanced Jewelry and Metalsmithing
Introduces students to tools and techniques used in working with non-ferrous metals through a combination of demonstrations, studio work and group discussions. Furthers design awareness and develops step-by-step metals techniques and craftsmanship skills on three-dimensional form as functional or wearable art. Prerequisite to ART258: ART257 or permission of instructor. Prerequisite to ART259: ART258 or permission of instructor.
Photography I
Introduces the history and fundamentals of photography and the theory of black and white film processing and printing. Emphasis is on camera handling, manual exposure control, composition, and basic color theory.
Photography II
Covers black and white film processing, printing and image control in the darkroom, experimental photography, and lens and filter selection. Introduces large format cameras and advanced shooting, composition, and camera handling techniques.
Introduction to Printmaking I
Introduces the materials, tools, and basic techniques of intaglio (etching) and relief (linocut and woodcut) printmaking processes. Emphasis is on development of technical skills, composition, and personal statement while gaining an understanding of edition printing, presentation, and the history of printmaking.
Introduction to Printmaking II
Continues to develop skills learned in ART270 while studying additional techniques and further development of composition and personal statement.
Introduction to Printmaking III
Emphasizes perfection of previous skills while developing new techniques toward the expression of students’ personal statements. Self-evaluation and creative thinking are encouraged.
Printmaking
Introduces the materials, tools, and techniques of mono- and collage-plate printmaking as well as the presentation and preservation of prints.
Sculpture I, II, III
Introduces basic sculptural materials, tools, and techniques. Includes modeling (clay, plaster, concrete, polyester putty), carving (stone, wood, concrete), casting (clay, plaster), and fabrication (wood, stone, clay).

Introduces techniques, materials, and equipment of airbrush watercolor painting.
Advanced Sculpture I (Mold Making)
The first of a three-term sequence devoted to the subject of mold making. Focuses on pat-tern development, mold making, and casting in hydrocal and wax. In addition to required reading, students are research the lost wax process and keep journal records.
Advanced Sculpture II (Metal Casting)
The second of a three-term sequence devoted to the subject of metal casting. Introduces tools and techniques used in transferring a mold into a cast figure through a combination of demonstrations, studio work and group discussions. Furthers awareness of design and develops step-by-step metals techniques and craftsmanship skills.
Advanced Sculpture III (Patinas/Finishes)
The third term of a three-term sequence. Studies sculptural finishing materials, tools and techniques, and includes an in-depth study of various forms of finishes and finishing techniques.
Watercolor I, II, III
Introduces watercolor techniques, color theory, media, and development of personal style and imagery.
