College Reading I

Strengthens basic comprehension, study skills, and vocabulary skills, as well as expands back-ground knowledge. Focuses on the continual practice and reinforcement of essential comprehension skills that follow a developmental hierarchy. Includes an individually prescribed reading plan in the reading lab. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis. Prerequisite: Designated placement test score as shown on current indicator chart.

College Reading II

Improves reading, study, and vocabulary skills by developing specific strategies and analytical skills. Skills to be developed include comprehension, critical thinking, graphic illustrations, and use of library resources. Course also addresses work-related literacies such as creative and critical thinking, following writ-ten and oral instructions, collaboration, and communication skills. Includes an individually prescribed reading plan in the reading lab. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis. Prerequisite: RD20.

Speed Reading for College

Teaches an effective speed reading process. It also develops skills needed to become a more intelligent reader and a more accomplished student. Skills include speed studying, speed researching, recognition of writing structures of fiction, various types of non fiction, and critical reading. Prerequisite: RD30 or college-level reading skills.

College Vocabulary

Adds significantly to students' reading, writing, and speaking vocabularies, fosters an interest in words, and offers strategies for vocabulary development throughout life. Students will study word elements that hold the key to understanding English words. The vocabulary presented in this class will be practical, contextual, and relevant for all college students. May be offered in a distance learning format where students complete all work online and via e-mail. Prerequisites: RD30 and WR30.

Critical Reading and Thinking

Develops students’ ability to think logically, problem solve, identify values, and understand the various reasoning processes. Students will gain confidence in becoming effective thinkers in academic, career, and personal situations. May be offered in a distance learning format where students complete all work online and via e-mail. Prerequisites: RD30 and WR30.

Introduction to Math

Improves basic arithmetic skills and provides a better understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics. Designed to improve problem-solving abilities in every day and work-related applications and to increase confidence and desire to continue the study of math. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis. Prerequisite: Designated placement test score as shown on current indicator chart.

Develops and improves academic-related skills in the beginning college student. Students explore the various behaviors and uses of resources associated with student success and practice. This includes numerous study skills techniques, such as goal setting, test taking, and time management. Attention is given to application of study skills to academic, career, and personal situations. May be offered in a distance learning format where students complete all work on-line and via e-mail.

Computer Technology Access Evaluation

Assists students with disabilities to identify their adaptive technology needs. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis. Offered infrequently. Prerequisite: Permission of Support Services coordinator or advisor.

Adaptive Keyboarding

Provides basic keyboarding instruction to students with disabilities who must use adaptive technologies for successful access to the keyboard or screen, and who are unable to compete successfully in mainstream keyboarding classes. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis. Offered infrequently. Prerequisite: Permission of Support Services coordinator or advisor.

Computer Access Lab

Provides adaptive computer access training for students with visual, physical, and learning disabilities. Students learn the basic operation of programs and peripherals to enhance their abilities to access and use computers in conjunction with their academic programs. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis. Offered infrequently. Prerequisite: Permission of Support Services coordinator or advisor.

Search for WR10 WR10 4 credits

Basic Writing

Designed for students needing rudiments of standard written English, including spelling. As an entry level course, WR10 helps students deal with their attitudes and anxieties regarding written assignments. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis. Prerequisite: Designated placement test score as shown on current indicator chart.

Fundamentals of Composition I

Reviews standard written English skills. In addition to vocabulary building in the context of reading assignments, attention is given to helping students understand the relationship of reading and writing processes as a means to organize and relate their own thoughts in clear, effective paragraphs. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis. Prerequisite: WR10.

Fundamentals of Composition II

Introduces basic essay format while reinforcing sentence skills and paragraph development. Critical thinking and reading is also emphasized. May be offered in a distance learning format where students complete all work on-line and via e-mail. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis. Prerequisite: WR20.
