  Provides an opportunity for students to learn the components of an effective scholarship essay; develop their own personal scholarship essay from initial draft to final essay format; explore resources for funding college education; and learn strategies for effective research via the Internet.   Designed to directly support TRIO students’ academic programs and improve their related success, as measured by GPA and number of credit hours successfully completed during the course of the term. Provides students information, techniques, strategies and skills helpful in becoming more efficient in time management, studying, listening, note taking and taking exams; addresses basic principles of psychology of learning and memory as they relate to college students. Prerequisites: RD30, WR115; CS101 or CS120 or documented proficiency.

  Provides the contemporary tools needed to make informed career decisions. Includes interest testing and self-assessment skills, values and attitudes.   Examines assertiveness and its relationship to personality development. Focuses on responsible assertive behavior in everyday life, emphasizing communication that respects self and others. Prerequisites: RD30 and WR30.

  Develops an awareness of personal decision-making style. Encourages the practice of different decision-making styles to make effective life choices. Prerequisites: RD30 and WR30.

  Explores professional technical careers in the fields of automotive/diesel, building construction, computer science, etc. Investigates diverse subjects including high technology and the trades, and explores the dynamic changing roles of men and women in the workplace.   Presents a coherent approach to positive parenting and is flexibly designed to meet parents’ varying needs and schedules. Specific parent-child interactions are analyzed and practical steps for effective interaction are identified. Prerequisites: RD30, WR121.

  Provides a structure for students engaging in career exploration and decision making. Building on the self awareness and personal growth work done in HD80, students will focus on career choice. Tools for planning a career and educational path are presented and used in developing individual plans. Success skills for the workplace and in job search are introduced. Students are encouraged to work as a team to support and assist each other. Course is graded on a pass/no pass basis. Prerequisite: HD80 or permission of instructor.

  Helps students develop basic planning and organizational skills for success in college classes. Includes choosing appropriate classes; explores ways to finance education; identifies community and campus resources; and encourages development of personal support systems.

  Introduces students to aspects of academic success centering on strategies for discipline- and delivery-specific study habits, Web-based resources and tools, and study groups.   Focuses on self-exploration and the development of career/life-planning skills through a process of analyzing predictable life transitions. Emphasis will be on understanding theories of adult development, and students will practice applying theory to life by integrating skills in self assessment, goal setting, decision making, and plan implementation. Prerequisites: RD30 and BT113 or WR115.

  Challenges students to cross over the boundaries of various academic disciplines and learn to use their imaginations freely to synthesize information and reshape ideas into new possibilities.   The second of a three-part sequence, focuses on developing professional presentation skills in a community forum. Prerequisites: CS10 or CS120, HD151, RD30, and BT113 or WR115.

  Transfer Success

  Prepares TRiO students for transfer to four-year colleges or universities. Focuses on under-standing the different types of educational institutions, development of strategies for choosing a transfer institution and major, identification of resources to assist in the transfer process, and information for obtaining financial aid including scholarships. Students will receive training in CIS (Career Information Systems) and use various school Web sites to aid in decision making. Prerequisites: CS101, CS120 or BA131 (or demonstrated computer proficiency); WR121.
