  Describes the organization, funding, and role of ambulance and rescue services in medical care. Includes legal and professional considerations regarding pre-hospital care, the history and trends in EMS, and evaluation and planning in EMS systems. Issues such as leadership and career development are also included.

  First Responder

  Trains individuals of various public safety occupations on the initial assessment and intervention of patients with limited equipment. Discusses the role of the first responder on emergency scenes and interaction with other emergency medical service providers.

  Emergency Medical Technician-Basic I and II

  The first of the emergency medical technician levels, course prepares individuals for certification in Oregon as an emergency medical technician-basic. Covers the recognition and management of medical and trauma patients. Course requires written application prior to admission.

  Emergency Medical Technician-Basic I and II Labs

  Develops students’ abilities to recognize and treat the symptoms of illness and injury in classroom labs. Includes skills in patient assessment, basic airway management, trauma assessment and management, medication administration, and the use of automated external defibrillators (AED). Students may also be scheduled for observation in an emergency department and on an ambulance.

  Emergency Response Communication and Documentation

  Covers principles of therapeutic communication, verbal, written, and electronic communications in the provision of EMS, documentation of elements of patient assessment, care and transport, communication systems, radio types, reports, codes, and correct techniques. Prerequisite: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in EMT131 or EMT–Basic certification.

  Emergency Response Patient Transportation

  Covers ambulance operations, laws, maintenance and safety, emergency response driving and route planning. Prerequisite: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in EMT131 or EMT–Basic certification.

• EMT180 Variable credit

  Cooperative Work Experience/EMT

  Provides opportunities for career-related field experiences in emergency medical services. May include both observation and hands-on work experience in hospitals and on emergency ambulances. Prerequisite: Instructor’s approval.

  Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate I and II

  Prepares individuals for certification in Oregon as an Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate. Presents the roles and responsibilities of the EMT; patient assessment and management; airway management; shock; intravenous therapy; basic ECG monitoring and defibrillation; protocols; and pharmacology and medications. Course requires a written application prior to admission. Prerequisite: Current Oregon EMT-Basic certification and written endorsement from a training officer or supervising physician.

  Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate I and II Labs

  Develops skills in intravenous and intraosseous fluid therapy, airway management, and cardiac arrest management including the administration of first-line cardiac medications. Also covers the fundamental applications of protocol-based practice. Concurrent enrollment in EMT191 and EMT192 required. Prerequisite: Oregon EMT-Basic certification.

  Provides inservice training in various emergency medical service topics.

• EMT205 3 credits

  Crisis Management and Prevention

  Focuses on crises encountered in a variety of settings related to public safety. Presents material on the communication and interaction with people in various crisis situations, death and death notification, suicide, behavioral emergencies, abuse, and stress. Techniques on the initial intervention, defusing and assessment, and referral in crisis are discussed.

  Emergency Service Rescue

  Introduces elementary procedures of rescue practices, systems, components, support, and control of rescue operations. Includes techniques and tools of patient extrication and emphasizes their applications in traffic accidents as required for paramedic certification.

  Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (Part A)

  The first of a four term sequence in the paramedic education series. Covers advanced pathophysiology, patient assessment, airway and shock management, trauma, general pharmacology, and respiratory emergencies. Prerequisites: Oregon EMT–Basic or Intermediate certification, EMT105, EMT170, EMT171, MTH65, and WR121. Corequisites: EMT271L and EMT281. Course requires a written application prior to admission.

  Emergency Medical Technician–Paramedic Lab (Part A)

  Develops students' abilities to recognize and treat the symptoms of illness and injury in a classroom lab situation. Includes hands-on assessment of simulated patients and utilizes both Basic and Advanced Life Support equipment to apply the concepts learned in EMT271. Also develops skills and abilities in managing emergency medical scenes, coordinating resources, and delegating tasks as appropriate. Corequisite: EMT271.

  Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (Part B)

  Second course in the paramedic series. Focuses on the anatomy and electrophysiology of the heart as well as the pathophysiology and prehospital management of cardiac disease. The Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider (ACLS) course will also be completed. Prerequisites: Current EMT–Basic or Intermediate certification and completion of EMT271, EMT271L and EMT281 with a "C" or better. Corequisites: EMT272L and EMT282.

  Emergency Medical Technician–Paramedic Lab (Part B)

  Develops students’ abilities to recognize and treat the symptoms of illness and injury in a classroom lab situation. Includes hands-on assessment of simulated patients and utilizes both Basic and Advanced Life Support equipment to apply the concepts learned in EMT272. Also develops skills and abilities in managing emergency medical scenes, coordinating resources, and delegating tasks as appropriate. Corequisite: EMT272.

  Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (Part C)

  Third course in the paramedic series. Covers obstetrics, neonatal care, pediatrics, including the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course, geriatrics, the nervous system, toxicology, infectious disease, behavioral and environmental emergencies, endocrinology, and a Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHLS) course. Prerequisites: Current EMT–Basic or Intermediate certification and completion of EMT272, EMT272L and EMT282 with a "C" or better. Corequisites: EMT273L and EMT283.

  Emergency Medical Technician–Paramedic Lab (Part C)

  Develops students’ abilities to recognize and treat the symptoms of illness and injury in a classroom lab situation. Includes hands-on assessment of simulated patients and utilizes both Basic and Advanced Life Support equipment to apply the concepts learned in EMT273. Also develops skills and abilities in managing emergency medical scenes, coordinating resources, and delegating tasks as appropriate. Corequisite: EMT273.

• EMT274 1 credit

  Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (Part D)

  Final course in the paramedic series. A case-review format is used to review and apply concepts learned in EMT271 through EMT273, and to understand how they apply to actual patient care scenarios as part of the EMT284 clinical coursework. Prerequisites: Current EMT-Basic or Intermediate certification and completion of EMT273 and EMT283 with a "C" or better. Corequisite: EMT284.

  Provides work-related experience in various emergency medical service environments with an emphasis on developing and improving Advanced Life Support (ALS) skills.

  Paramedic Clinical Practice I

  Clinical application of intubation and assessment skills in surgery and clinical rotations in the emergency department. Prerequisites: Current EMT-Basic or Intermediate certification. Corequisite: EMT271.

• EMT282 1 credit

  Paramedic Clinical Practice II

  Clinical application of intubation and assessment skills in surgery and clinical rotation in respiratory therapy and emergency departments. Prerequisites: Current EMT–Basic or Intermediate certification and completion of EMT271 and EMT281 with a "C" or better. Corequisite: EMT272.

• EMT283 5 credits

  Paramedic Clinical Practice III

  Hospital rotations in the emergency department, ICU, CCU, obstetrics, pediatrics and NICU. Prerequisites: Current EMT–Basic or Intermediate certification and completion of EMT272 and EMT282 with a "C" or better. Corequisite: EM273.

• EMT284 8 credits

  Paramedic Clinical Practice IV

  Ambulance internship. Individual conferences with the clinical coordinator are included in the course. Case reviews and discussions will be coordinated with EMT274. Prerequisites: Current EMT–Basic or Intermediate certification and completion of EMT273 and EMT283 with a "C" or better. Corequisite: EMT274.

  Advanced Cardiac Life Support

  Teaches emergency medical providers such as physicians, nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and respiratory therapists the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage an adult cardiac arrest and other cardiac emergencies using advanced life support procedures, medications, and equipment. Prerequisite: Oregon EMT–Basic or Intermediate certification.

  Pediatric Advanced Life Support

  Teaches providers how to recognize infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest, to provide strategies for preventing cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children, and how to perform the cognitive and psychomotor skills for resuscitating and stabilizing infants and children in respiratory failure, shock, or cardiopulmonary arrest. Prerequisite: Oregon EMT–Basic or Intermediate certification.

• EMT293 1 credit

  Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support

  Develops the critical thinking skills required for EMTs, paramedics, nurses, and physicians to effectively treat the trauma patient in the field. Students will be able to identify the mechanism of injury, recognize life-threatening injuries, relate pathophysiology to injuries, assess and manage trauma patients, and perform appropriate interventions. Prerequisite: Oregon EMT–Basic or Intermediate certification.

  Advanced Medical Life Support

  Teaches emergency medical providers such as physicians, nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and respiratory therapists methods of assessing and managing a patient in medical crisis, progressing to a diagnostic-based approach and development of specific treatment plans for specific medical conditions. Prerequisite: Oregon EMT–Basic or Intermediate certification.

  Provides advanced EMT continuing education and refresher material based on individual student need. May review critical core curriculum for certified EMT-Intermediates or EMT-Paramedics, or provide remediation for EMTs attempting to pass Oregon or national written and practical certifying exams.
