VII.C.010

Rogue Community College student government organization shall be given as great a degree of authority and responsibility in the operation of student affairs as is consistent with state laws and wise operation of the college.

The Board of Education encourages the interest of students in its deliberations and a student representative should report at regularly scheduled board meetings. Any student is welcome to attend board meetings.

The Rogue Community College student ID card will be required for all students registering for six or more credits, regardless of residency.

ID cards will be available but optional for students registering for zero to five credits at any location.

VII.C.030

The Board of Education of Rogue Community College encourages the formation of student organizations as a fulfillment of the interest of the students and as an informal extension of the process of education.

The president shall assure the formulation rules for recognition of student organizations. Only those recognized organizations shall be considered eligible to share in the rights and privileges of student activities, such as the use of college facilities, channels for publicity and staff sponsorship.

VII.C.040

Each recognized Rogue Community College student function and organization shall have a staff advisor. It shall be the responsibility of the interested students to find a staff member willing to act as advisor. Advisorship shall be subject to administrative approval.

It is anticipated that the students shall accept major responsibility for the operation of student functions. Staff members are to give example and leadership to the students in charge of student affairs and to assume responsibility only when such personal involvement appears essential for the best interests of students and Rogue Community College.

It shall be the policy of the college to encourage a program of student initiated extracurricular activities as an informal extension of the education process.

The administration and students shall formulate rules for the initiation, conduct and appraisal of all student initiated extracurricular activities.

VII.C.060

Speakers sponsored by student and/or staff may be invited to speak at Rogue Community College in accordance with established administrative procedures. This policy is not intended to:

  • Apply to instructors who invite speakers into their classes.
  • Deal with issues, which may be perceived as of a controversial nature, which are part of classroom material presented by instructors.
  • Deal with non-college sponsored speakers on campus using a designated Public Forum/Free Speech area.

One of the objectives of Rogue Community College is to serve as an educational and cultural center.  This objective may be furthered through public forums and guest speakers.

The college has the responsibility to develop informed, critical and objective thinking, and such thinking can be best encouraged in an atmosphere assuring a free interchange of ideas.  Those responsible for scheduling speakers will attempt to obtain speakers who will present diverse views in the best tradition of the American forum.  Speakers should be intellectually stimulating and educationally justifiable.  Efforts shall be made to present a balance of views on controversial subjects.

The Rogue Community College Board of Education encourages the free exchange of ideas through the invitation of guest speakers and public lectures at the college.  The administration shall establish procedures for invitation of guest speakers to assure that they present diverse views in the best tradition of American forum.  Speakers should be intellectually stimulating and educationally justifiable. Efforts shall be made to present a balance of views on controversial subjects.

VII.C.070

Public performance by student groups of Rogue Community College is endorsed and encouraged with the reservation that such participation will not interfere unduly with other educational requirements established at the college and that students will not be exploited.

The college will utilize opportunities for students to participate in the activities in the communities of the college district if such opportunities are educationally sound.

The Rogue Community College administration will be responsible for the evaluation of each contest in which students or the college is requested or invited to participate and approve or disapprove such participation. Participation guidelines will be:

The contest is one which has goals which agree with the mission of Rogue Community College.

Participation of Rogue Community College students will assure educational value commensurate with the effort to be expended by the students and by the college.
